PAUL LASTER, who is familiar to many in Southern California
from his exhibitions at Pence Gallery, will present a selection
of works that expand the repertoire of his original, mixed
media tape works of the last several years.
Laster has created a suite of three silkscreens, a suite of four lithographs, and has recently created large-format Polaroids that continue his experimentation with the re-generation of source material. Laster’s intuitive
juxtaposition of the figurative ground with the abstraction
of color and pattern creates a natural layering of formal
information, while his choice of images from the
early history of photography and his layering of visual detritus
from sources as diverse as the New York Times and the
Albuquerque Yellow Pages creates a specific conceptual
poetry.
