The Mark Moore Gallery is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of paintings by Michael Reafsnyder. Once again, the artist springs from
the tradition of the Cobra school (Asgar Jorn, etc) whipping up tornadoes of poison and sugar as small paintings. Reafsnyder’s gift is making
mounds of oil paint lock into complex compositions and unnamable
colors. What looks ’wrong’ becomes an unexpected ’right’, like a fly ball
becoming a homerun. They are not about traditional brush work, the surfaces are chopped, squashed, troweled, and swept. The content in turn, and more importantly, is an about face - moments of gleeful pleasure and bitter irony smeared together. What looks to be abhorrent and chaotic, is actually a classic fairy tale. Reafsnyder makes the act of painting a deliciously nasty practice.
