Jay McCafferty
On the Wall
May 21 to July 2, 2005
Mark Moore Gallery is pleased to announce the first exhibition of Jay McCafferty’s new series of solar-burn-on-paper works.
Playing off a cubist sense of space and color, the works included in Off the Wall find McCafferty exploring a dematerialized picture plane and experimenting with a constantly flipping sense of figure and ground.
In these pieces McCafferty pushes his practice of solar burning—done by the artist in his roof-top studio

—to a new level. McCafferty rubs chalk pastel into the paper’s surface, achieving delicate color variations. He then burns it, focusing the sun’s rays with a magnifying glass, and arranges the blackened fragments on the wall intuitively according to a loose grid.
Jay McCafferty’s work has been seen in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
